About
My name is Paul Hanley. I completed this website in the spring of 2015 to fulfill the requirements of an M.Ed in Reading Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
I am a lifetime student and adult ESL instructor in Arizona. In my spare time, I enjoy tai chi, hiking, writing, reading, attending church, watching sports, playing with my cats ... and listening to all genres of music.
This project would not have been possible without the help of my friend Mary Szabo; she gave me what amounts to a mini seminar in music theory. She also recorded some of the music samples that illustrate the concepts herein.
Another indispensable contributor was my Independent Study course instructor, Jill Ostrow. As I have grown to expect of her from past experience, Jill went above and beyond in both the quality of her guidance and its timeliness. She somehow manages to impose high standards while still retaining a special knack for helping students develop and lucidly express their own ideas, rather than imposing her values on their work.
Finally, I am indebted to Bob and Marilyn Horne and Ben Ledin. All three of them have enthusiastically supported me as a teacher and as a man. Bob has mentored me ever since I started teaching ESL. At one point early on, I grew so discouraged with my students and myself that I didn't want to continue teaching ESL. Bob's dedication, years of experience, courage, and generosity have helped me keep in perspective what teaching and life are all about. I now find teaching one of the most meaningful elements of my life.
Marilyn saw my potential as a teacher and is the one ultimately responsible for my having an opportunity to teach ESL. In spite of my shortcomings, she has continued to entrust new students to me. She has given me the liberty to run my classrooms independently. She is a rock of support and common sense. And of all the people I've ever worked with, she has the most charitable spirit.
Ben plowed through the cumbersome text and offered feedback. He is my most valued friend, a friend who supports me unconditionally, yet isn't afraid to dial my number for a wake-up call now and then. He has long been both an anchor and a pillar in an uncertain world.
I am of course responsible for any shortcomings that remain on this website.
